BC FireSmart rebates: the rules, with sources

Province‑wide rules

The basics

Local governments and First Nations run the rebates, funded by the province's FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program (administered by UBCM). Not every community offers one. BC Wildfire Service
Maximum: 50% of eligible cost, up to $5,000 per property. UBCM 2026 guide
You need a FireSmart Home Ignition Zone assessment by a Local FireSmart Representative or Wildfire Mitigation Specialist first. The work must be what the assessment recommends, within 30 m of the home. BC Wildfire Service
You can do the work yourself or hire a contractor. Rules on paying for your own labour vary.

How communities set it up

Kootenay Boundary (RDKB)

$500–$5,000. Zone caps: home up to $5,000 (incl. $500 gutters); 0–1.5 m up to $4,000; 1.5–10 m up to $3,000; 10–30 m up to $2,000. 2026 intake May 1 – Oct 31.
